So I wrote her one, but I’m not sure whether to give it to her or not. My friends are discouraging it, but none of them have girlfriends, so I doubt I should trust them with this kind of thing. Dear Jeffrey, Even if they don’t have girlfriends, your friends are totally right. You should not (not not not not not) give a girl a poem or love letter, or even a random gift, unless you’re already dating her. It would only work out if she’s already hopelessly in love with you – and, uh, that’s not a risk you want to take. Even if she thinks you’re cute, a poem will only scare her off or weird her out.

Stash your poem in a private place (no, not your blog). Flirt with your crush in a less risky way – like, by talking to her. And if you ever do snag her, and things are going well, then you can shower her with all the romantic stuff.

Dear Stephanie, It all depends, my dear, on how you define love. If you think love is crazy attraction, awesome conversations and thinking about each other every second of the day, then yes, you can feel love after only a week.

But personally, I think love is more than that. I think it’s about trust, surviving through rough times, and being able to have huge differences but still get along, even when things are kinda boring. That kind of love can only come after months or even years.

Your own feelings about love may change over time. But for now, if you think that what you’re feeling is love, then go ahead and shout it from the rooftops. Whatever you wanna call it, it’s an awesome feeling. Enjoy it!

Does "I luv you" mean "I love you"?

Dear Jessica, Luv = love. Especially if it comes from a boy. (It’s such a huge, earth-shattering feat for them to say anything like that for the first time – if they misspell it a little bit, you’re allowed to forgive them.)

So I’m pretty positive that your boy is feeling it for real. But if you need a second opinion, straight up tell him, “I love you.” If he says “I love you” back, you’re golden. If he says anything else, he might need a little more time to express his feelings for you.

Which brings up a good question: what’s the most horrific, trauma-inducing reply that someone could say to, “I love you”? My vote’s for, “You have a little something between your teeth.” Click on “submit your advice” and leave your own.

Dear Aerials, Everyone has their own definition of love. But since you asked me, here’s the real answer: love means strong commitment, respect and understanding (not just the mushy romantic stuff). And that comes with time.

Think you’re in love with this guy, but you've never even dated him? It’s just a crush.

But hey, that’s not a bad thing. "Like" can turn into "love" if both people want it to. So ask out your crush and get going on it already!

Dear Vanessa, Aw, you mean you can't just take his word for it?

Okay, okay - here's a cheat sheet. If four or more of these are true, then your boyfriend's being sincere:

He calls you as much as you call him. (Or texts you or IM's you or whatever.) If you're the only one initiating the convos, he doesn't think you're worth his time.
He wants you around when his friends are there. If he's keeping you from his pals, there's a chance he sees you as just a booty call.
He's not afraid to hold your hand in public. Hand-holding is just about the girliest PDA there is. If he'll do it for you, he's hooked.
He doesn't mind doing the most boring things with you. Does he only seem to be up for hanging out when your folks are out of town? Or is he cool just coming over to help you organize your closet? That's true love right there.
He doesn't keep you a secret. As in, you're all over his Facebook page. And when you meet his sister, she says, "OMG, I've heard so much about you!" instead of, "Vanessa who, now?"
He's nice to your parents. Guys who are only interested in hooking up always fail this test. They're bold enough to lie to you, but they chicken out when they meet your dad.
He gets jealous when you talk to other guys. If this is the only one you answered "yes" to, then your guy might just have jealousy issues. But combined with the sweeter stuff, it means he's afraid to lose you.
And finally,you can just kinda feel it in your gut. Ladies, listen to your gut. Your gut knows what it's talking about. If it says he's lying, then he probably is.

Dear Sam Boy, there's a lot written about kissing … from the how to, step by step, Time-Life Books explanations on what to do and when to do it (which if you ask me are downright creepy) to the bizarre. Check this out:

Take your hand make a shape like you were going to pull the trigger on a gun. Place the tip of your index finger (the tip = the joint farthest from you hand ) under her chin and lift her head to your mouth.

Guns and kissing in the same paragraph? Let's see … guns are scary, kissing is scary, Charlton Heston is good with guns and good with kissing … okay, I get it.

In spite of what most advice givers will claim, there is no real way to tell someone how to kiss. This is one thing that is learned by doing - not reading - so in spite of my incredible experience and considerable qualification in this area, I can't tell you exactly what to do.

But since you asked, here are a few pointers:

1. Do not attempt a kiss if you can taste anything other than minty freshness.
2. Do not engulf your partner's face with your open mouth. Here's a good rule of thumb - if you can see your partner's ears, pull back! If your lips are parted more than tongue's width you've crossed a line.
3. Do not bite anything - unless you're both into that sort of thing.
4. Do not slobber - if you need to spit, you must quit. Swallow … don't think about it … just do it.
5. You've got hands - use 'em, but make sure you keep them in an acceptable zone, so to speak. Think gentle hug position.

For those of you who respond well to more practical applications … kissing has a lot of similarities to enjoying a soft serve ice cream. Keep it slow, gentle and varied.

Dear Lip Gloss Or Not?, Okay, the first step here is to not freak out about it. If a guy is dying to kiss you, he won't care if things get a little smudgy. (Besides, if you get lipstick on him, helping him wipe it off gives you a great excuse to touch him again.)

But there are ways to keep things smudge-free. Fruit-flavored lip gloss drives guys wild (seriously - studies have been done about it!) and won’t get all over his face. If you must wear bright colors, look for no-smudge, long-lasting lipsticks and lip stains. And for goodness sake, don’t reapply if it’s getting close to kissing time.

And of course, going naked (on your lips!) is always an option. Most guys don’t care what color your lips are. They’re just excited to kiss them.

Dear Mariah, If your boyfriend breaks up with you because of some braces, he’s lame and shallow. And he’s also pretty dumb, because braces and kisses go together just fine.

Seriously. Kissing someone with braces is totally safe (as long as you don't try to lick their teeth or something). The chances of getting jabbed or cut are super-low, and those rumors you've heard about "getting caught" (ick) originated in, like, 1940 when braces weren't as smooth and kissing-friendly as they are today.

So if your guy does dump you, don’t be afraid to make out with someone else on the rebound.

Dear Shawn, He'll probably get the hint if you crack your knuckles and say, "Okay, dude. It's tongue-wrestlin' time."

Wanna be more subtle? Follow these steps and you'll be tongue wrestling in no time:

Wait until the right moment. You'll know it when it happens. Here's a hint: you'll be close to each other, you'll be looking into each other's eyes, and no one else will be around.
Make that moment happen. Your date spot might be at a bowling alley or a school dance, but you won't get your kiss till the walk home - or until you surreptitiously drag him into the parking lot.
Awkward silences are your friend. Wait for a break in the conversation, then look up at him and smile softly. He'll get the hint.
If all else fails, find an excuse to touch him. If it's cold, ask to hold his hand. If he's got a fuzzy thing in his hair, take it out for him. (If there's no fuzzy thing, pretend there is.) Coming together physically will make the transition to a kiss way more natural.
Don't just stand there looking at him like a weirdo. There's no rule that says you have to wait for him to kiss you. If the mood is right, lean in and kiss him yourself.
